DISTANCIA
|
Tomás Choc (played by Carlos Escalante) receives news that his daughter Lucía (Saknicté Racancoj) has been found. She had been kidnapped by the army
during the civil war of the 1980s, when she was only three.
Tomás is now old, his wife is dead, and he has to take five days off from work to travel 100 miles to the town of Nebaj to reuinite with his daughter.
After walking, bussing and hitchhiking for two days, Tomás finally arrives in Nebaj. An organization sets up the meeting and provides a translator, since Tomás
speaks Spanish and Quiche, and Lucía speaks only Q'eqchi, another Mayan language that her adoptive parents spoke. Tomás gives her a notebook he has
been keeping all these years, recording the history of his family and community, so that his daughter and grandchildren will know where they came from.
A beautiful film. Trailer: vimeo.com/30889269

THE FOUNTAIN (La fuente de la vida)
|
This film is based on the Mayan myth of the First Father who
sacrificed himself to found the tradition of planting a tree over the
deceased to foster their rebirth. The film has three stories: 1.) the "real"
story of a scientist trying to cure cancer while his wife is
dying of cancer; 2.) the novel his dying wife writes about a Spanish
conquistador who is sent to Guatemala to find the Biblical tree of life,
hidden by God inside the triangle of three pyramids; and 3.) the final
chapter of said novel, which the doctor attempts to write after his wife
dies, in which he tries to figure out how it ends: as a conquistador, a
doctor conquering death? By joining his wife in death? Or by planting a
tree? The scenes of Mayans are very brief, and not flattering, and the
film would not merit a place here if not for its high artistry. It
is an extraordinarily rich and imaginative adventure of the mind, a new
2001: A Space Odyssey for our new millennium.

LOS GIGANTES NO EXISTEN (Giants Don't Exist)
|
This film takes place a couple of years after the Río Negro Massacre of 1982, an assault upon an Achi Maya community in which 177
people were killed by the military as part of President Efraín Ríos Montt's "scorched earth" campaign, an effort to wipe out the
indigenous populations of Guatemala in order to reduce the risk of rebellion and to use their lands for mining, dams, and development.
Eleven-year-old Andrés (played by José Javier Martínez) is one of the few survivors of the massacre, and is now living with
Pedro, the soldier who killed the rest of his family. Most of the film shows Andrés wrestling with the possibility of running away.
With Pedro he has at least a home and stability, and the emotional dependence of Pedro's traumatized wife. He argues with his best friend
the pros and cons of escaping, but they don't know where to go. But the army is putting pressure on Pedro to get rid of the boy, whom they
see as a future insurgent, and Andrés senses the increasing danger.
Los gigantes no existen is based on the experiences of Jesús Tecú Osorio, a survivor of the Río Negro Massacre. In the film there is a modicum of attachment between the boy and the childless couple, but in real life, Jesús Tecú was only a slave. Fortunately he escaped and he has devoted his life to seeking justice for the Achi Maya people. He wrote a book about his amazing life, Memoria de las Masacres de Río Negro: Recuerdo de mis Padres y Memoria para mis Hijos, translated into English as The Rio Negro Massacres.

LA HIJA DEL PUMA (The Puma's Daughter)
|
Based on the 1986 novel by Swedish journalist Monica Zak, who based the story on actual events she reported on.
Guerrillas come to the village of San Francisco and free some prisoners. They ask for food and recruits and then moved on.
The village is divided about what to do about the guerrillas. The recently married Mateo (Gerardo Taracena, from
El violin, Apocalypto, De ida y vuelta) confides to his sister Aschlop (Ángeles Cruz) that he would go with them if
he were not married. Days later, the military arrives, massacres entire crowds of people, and takes prisoners, including
Mateo. The few who can flee end up in a refugee camp in Chiapas, Mexico. Although Aschlop and her family are safe,
Aschlop clandestinely crosses the border back to Guatemala to find Mateo, leading to further dangers. The massacre
portrayed in this movie took place on July 17, 1982. This is a low-budget but powerful film. Ángeles Cruz is excellent
in the lead role. She went on to star in Rito Terminal and Espiral and had minor roles in La otra
conquista and El violin (all Mexican films). David Villalpando, star of El Norte, has a small role
as one of the guerrillas. Pictured at left is the novel, published by F&G Editores
(original title: Pumans Dotter).

IXCÁN
|
Benedetta (Carla Signoris) is an Italian woman who has just lost her mother. To forget her troubles she travels to
Guatemala to make an art video and finds a suitable subject in a Quiché family of three women from three generations:
the traditional grandmother (Angela Alvarado), her daughter Natividad (Estela Alvarado), who has just returned from
twelve years of fighting in the civil war, and Natividad's bratty daughter Encarnación (Glenda Lopes), who is ashamed of
her indigenous family and idolizes white culture. Encarnación has a plan to move to the U.S. with her metalhead friends,
and she treats her mother with extreme disrespect. The tension between mother and daughter is exacerbated by
the obnoxious, pretentious filmmaker who needs dramatic scenes for her project, yet this character also adds humor to
what might otherwise be a grim tale. The story is similar to Distancia above, although the tone of the
two films are worlds apart. Still, Ixcán is surprisingly good for a low-budget movie. The plot was a collaborative
creation by the crew and actors, which may account for a couple of subplots--Natividad also applies for a job as a maid,
and she reunites with Kanek, an old comrade who lost his entire family in the war, and now confesses his love for her.

IXCANUL (Volcano)
|
Maria (María Mercedes Coroy), a 17-year-old growing up of the coffee-growing town of San Vicente Pacaya, is in love with
never-do-well Pepe (Marvin Coroy), but her parents have arranged a marriage with Ignacio (Justo Lorenzo), son of the
hacendado whom everyone in town works for. When Maria gets pregnant, Pepe leaves town, heading for the U.S.,
leaving Maria in an awkward situation. When Ignacio finds out about the pregnancy, putting at risk her father's
(Manuel Antún) job. Based
on a true story, this is a simple tale beautifully told. The cinematography and lighting are excellent, perhaps the
best ever in Guatemalan cinema, and the talented actors make the film come alive. Ixcanul could have been a frigid
minimalist work made to please only film festival judges, but the heartfelt warmth of the story comes through in every
scene. Director Bustamente grew up with a Kaqchikel nanny, and his love of this Mayan culture, and his humility in working
with the actors and allowing them to contribute their insights to the film has produced a beautiful work. The only
professional actor was María Telón, who plays Maria's mother. She worked in street theater and admirably plays the most
emotional role in the film. Ixcanul has won awards all over the world and is sure to become the new gold standard
for filmmaking in Guatemala.

MEN WITH GUNS (Hombres Armados)
|
Dr. Fuentes (played by Federico Luppi) once trained students in rural medicine in order to treat Indians living in
remote areas. Years later he decides to follow up on his project to see how his students are doing. He travels to each of
the medical camps but finds that his students have all disappeared one by one. He tries to find out what happened to them, but the
locals, usually Indians, won't talk. All Dr. Fuentes can learn about the fate of his scattered humanitarian projects is
that men came. Men with guns. Gradually the doctor begins to understand the magnitude of the ruthless forces in society.
Like John Sayles' previous film Lone Star, Men with Guns is a dangerous Oedipal quest in which the
searcher risks learning about his own culpability. The idealistic doctor has lived a life of wilful ignorance, denying
the reality around him as he sent his students to their doom.
Dr. Fuentes' character was inspired by Dr. Arrau, a character in Francisco Goldman's 1992 novel The Long Night of White Chickens. But his project is based on actual village health care programs in the third world, which began in China as the "barefoot doctor" program and was brought to Mexico by David Werner, author of the booklet Donde no hay doctor. Director-writer John Sayles draws from a variety of sources to create a tale of global importance. Although the civil war between the military and guerrillas suggests Guatemala, no specific country is mentioned, and the array of indigenous languages spoken--Tzotzil, Náhuatl, Maya and Kuna--defy a specific location. The soundtrack also comes from all over Latin America. The purpose of all this is not to decorate the film magic realism but to raise the tale to a universal level, to remind us that the brutality shown here could happen anywhere. Damian Delgado (who also starred in La otra conquista) plays a military deserter who holds the doctor hostage. Delgado speaks some Nahuatl in the film (he does not speak it fluently in real life, but his parents did). Dan Rivera González is excellent as the plucky orphan Conejo, but sadly he has not appeared in other films. Other cast: Tania Cruz - Mute girl. Iguandili López - Kuna mother. Nandi Luna Ramírez - Kuna daughter. Damián Alcázar - Padre Portillo, the fallen priest.

EL MITO DEL TIEMPO (The Myth of Time) (Numaj Ruq'iij Q'aq Bajlam)
|
Not a convention film but a fantasia of images, poetry, and beautiful cinematography which loosely tells un
unwritten chapter of the Mayan Popol Vuh through the story of a boy's transformation in a post-apocalyptic
world. We follow The Dark Eyed One through his creation, his experiences as a child soldier, first love, and
ultimately The Revelation. The film switches freely from Spanish, Mayan, and American and British English, and
veers between comedy and tragedy, history and futurism. The Quiche title means "Now Arrives the Time of the
Black Jaguar."

EL NORTE
|
Quiché field workers arrange a late-night meeting to orgazine a union in order to get better working conditions.
The authorities are tipped off and invade the meeting, killing as many men as they can. The indigenous women are
rounded up and hauled off in a truck. Enrique and Rosa, a son and daughter in their early twenties, are left
without their parents. They flee to Mexico, then to Los Angeles, where they attempt to start life anew by learning
English and finding work. Along the way they meet friends, helpers, betrayers
and exploiters as they face the wonders and difficulties of a strange
new land. The cinematography is outstanding and often enhances the symbolic,
literary quality of the story, which shows the brother and sister gradually losing their traditional values
the farther they are from home. The lead actors, David Villalpando and Zaide Silvia Gutiérrez, are Mexican. Both
have had successful careers following this cricitally acclaimed film. The DVD from
Criterion Collection includes a second disc of bonus features.

EL REGRESO DE LENCHO (The Return of Lencho)
|
Lencho, a 30-year-old artist and graffiti writer, is back in Guatemala after living a
decade in New York. Eager to bring artistic expression to his home country silenced by
over 30 years of terror, Lencho assembles a collective of artists to produce public art
projects of social impact. As its first activity, the group organizes an art festival in
Rabinal, a small, indigenous village in the Guatemalan highlands. The group's work comes
of interest to the director of a secret "social cleansing" program of the national police
designed to quash dissension and organizing among the youth. As Lencho labors to
coordinate the music, poetry and muralism components of the festival, he finds himself
increasingly haunted by memories of the death of his father, a journalist during the
civil war. The film is done "guerrilla-style", and the dialogue sometimes seems taken out of leftist pamphlets, with the jargon sounding forced when actually spoken out loud. One of the more touching aspects of the film is Lencho's friendship with El Chino, a teenage graffiti artist whom he rescues from the police. Lencho introduces him to the work of the great Mexican muralists and inspires the kid's artistic aspirations. Sadly, the actor who played El Chino, Carlos Chacon, was killed by the military police not long after completing this film, a grim reminder that the oppression depicted in the film is no exaggeration.

EL SILENCIO DE NETO
|
Neto, a twelve year old boy, grows up amid the political turmoil of 1954, when the C.I.A.
supported the overthrow of President Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán in order to protect U.S.
corporate interests such as the infamous United Fruit Company. However, Neto only dimly
perceives these events via confusing radio announcements, worried adult faces in his house,
and arguments between his father and brother. Neto's father is strict and narrow-minded,
while his Uncle Ernesto is fun-loving, does magic tricks, travels to other places and
brings back gifts and stories. The title refers to Neto's--and by extension Guatemala's--
unwillingness to speak up against wrongdoing. The only Indian character, besides a few
background figures, is Nidia, the maid. Neto has a crush on her but also feels superior
to her, and this too must become part of his political awakening. When he calls her
"India ixta" ("dirty Indian") out of jealousy, Nidia rebukes him,
"En este país todos somos Indios." ("In this country we are all Indians.")
The DVD includes a making-of feature (with subtitles) and a director's commentary
playable in Spanish or English.
